Introduction to the Health Assessment Laboratory

Physical assessment experiment is a required one-credit course totaling 2 hours per week. To strengthen students’ abilities regarding clinical nursing care, the course content mainly comprises physical assessment techniques and knowledge regarding each system of the adult human body. This course has two emphases: (1) implement the physical examination techniques of each system; and (2) confirm and record instances that differ from normal anatomy and physiology.

1. Students can enhance their basic medical knowledge regarding advanced anatomy and physiology.

2. By practicing physical examination techniques with classmates, students can cultivate their communication and cooperation ability.

3. Students can possess knowledge regarding physical assessment of each system.

4. Students can accurately perform physical examination techniques, such as inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation.

5. Students can accurately use tools for physical examination, such as the stethoscope, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, and percussion hammer.

6. Students can accurately perform physical assessment techniques on their classmates, make records, and apply the techniques in their future clinical internship.

7. Students can understand that physical examination techniques are essential to the basic abilities of nursing personnel and can enjoy learning such techniques.

8. Students can demonstrate active learning and self-preparation to attain self-growth by cultivating learning interests.

1. This course imparts physical assessment techniques, using the human body teaching model as well as pictures, to construct students’ basic medical knowledge of advanced physiological anatomy.

2. Instructional videos are provided to help stimulate students’ learning interest and can be used for review. Students can improve their learning attitude by demonstrating responsibility for themselves and their specialties.

3. By demonstrating physical assessment techniques in class, teachers instruct students in how to use tools and in the process of communicating with patients. In the demonstration process, students can learn the importance of cultivating basic professional nursing competencies.

4. Teachers introduce the professional physical assessment course website established by the faculty of the Medical School of the University of California to help students understand the clinical applicability of this course. The website can also be used by students for self-growth and learning.

5. Teaching methods include technique demonstration and practice. Support teaching materials include computer-aided multimedia teaching, professional teaching website introduction and demonstration, instructional videos, and the human body model.

6. By writing examination reports, students are trained to write objective information in nursing records.
