Introduction of Macau

Synopsis

Macau consists of the Macau Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. The Macau Peninsula is the center of Macau's urban development. Taipa and Coloane are originally two separate islands, which are connected by reclamation projects, and the reclamation area is called Cotai City. Macau used to be a small fishing village, whose real name was "Hao Jing" or "Hao Jing'ao". The name of Macau is derived from a Chinese goddess whom fishermen admire very much-Tin Hau, In the middle of the 16th century, a group of Portuguese arrived in Macau and asked the local residents what was the place called. The local residents mistakenly thought that the Portuguese asked about the Ma Niang Temple and answered "Ma Ge". Hence, it was translated as "MACAU" by Portuguese, which became the origin of the Portuguese name of Macao. In the following four hundred years, the Eastern and Western cultures blended together, leaving behind many historical and cultural heritages, making Macau a unique city.
